The Return of Ferris Bueller

by Mike Krumboltz

Alert Principal Rooney! Ferris Bueller, that righteous dude we all know and love, is making a return.

A 10-second teaser for an upcoming Super Bowl commercial shows a modern-day Matthew Broderick opening bedroom curtains, turning to the camera, and saying, “How can I handle work on a day like today?” Then the familiar “boom-boom-chick-chicka-chickah” music from the John Hughes movie plays over a black screen that reads, “2.5.12″ (the date of the Super Bowl).

Some wondered if the clip might indicate that a sequel to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is in the works. Not so. Reports indicate that it’s actually a sneak peek at a commercial for Honda. According to auto blog Jalopnik, the commercial, which was directed by Todd Phillips of “The Hangover,” will feature a Honda CR-V doing the same kind of stunts Ferris and Cameron did in Cameron’s dad’s 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. Much of the commercial will mimick shots from the 1986 film.

The idea of the inspirational, rebellious, take-no-gruff Ferris driving a mini-SUV is a little sad to us. But, hey, everybody gets old. And judging by the buzz around the teaser, Ferris hasn’t lost his popularity. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, bloods, wastoids, dweebies — they all adore him.

Apple Gatekeeper to protect your new Mac from malware in Mountain Lion

Have you got the key?
Apple Gatekeeper to protect your new Mac from malware in Mountain Lion. Software, Apple, Mac OS X 0

Ask any Mac user and they will proudly tell you that Apple Mac’s don’t get viruses and therefore they don’t need to worry about all that kind of stuff.

What they don’t tell you however is there are still apps that can do things that you don’t want them to do – like raid your contacts book or peer into the files you have on your computer.

To stop any of this becoming an issue before it even starts to become an issue, Apple is adding a new feature to its next version of its operating system,?OS X Mountain Lion, called Gatekeeper.

The new security feature aims to help Apple tighten its grip on apps created for the operating system ,while at the same time giving you control over which applications can be downloaded and installed on your Mac – and in the extreme case, letting users restrict downloads all together.

“One of the biggest threats to personal computer security is malicious software downloaded from the web. Users can be tricked into installing malware when they download and install applications that seem safe, but actually contain harmful software,” Apple?tells Pocket-lint.

To combat this, the new system will have three options allowing users to take their own approach to securing their Mac without hindering them if they like to live on the “edge”.

The first option will be to set Mountain Lion to allow apps to be downloaded only ?from the Mac App Store – ideal if you are trying to stop a new user do anything other than download safe apps – while the second is to allow users only to download apps that are either in the Mac App Store or by identified developers. The third is to let you download apps as and when you want, but with same warning notices that Apple serves in Mac OS X Lion.

Aside from just three security settings, Apple is also instigating a new developers programme that it hopes will create a list of “safe” developers that can be trusted.

While some will see it as a way to eventually control all the apps that make it to the desktop, in the same way the company does on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, Apple seems to have the interests of users at heart.

The new safe list will work by allowing them to sign their work digitally with an ID key shared with Apple to then be used with the new Gatekepper feature. No key (which will cost ?100 a year), no access through the gate, it is as simply as that. ?

Developers keen to take advantage of the new Gatekeeper “club” can do so by becoming a part of Apple’s Developer ID programme and users will be able to change the settings in the Security and Privacy settings panel in system preferences.

The new feature is available in the new version of Apple OS X Mountain Lion.

Apple has told Pocket-lint that the new features and new operating system, Apple OS X Mountain Lion, will be out in the summer. Developers who want to get started with the new features, can do so via the Apple Mac OS X Mountain Lion developer preview out on Thursday 16 February.?

Virgin Media targets hardcore gamers with Eurogamer Expo 2012 tie-in

Superfast broadband on show floor
Virgin Media targets gamers with Eurogamer Expo 2012 tie-in

Virgin Media has announced that it is to be the headline sponsor of the Eurogamer Expo 2012 consumer show in September, and will offer its superfast broadband for gamers to try out.

If nothing else, up to 120Mb broadband makes mincemeat of download speeds over Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and Steam, among others. And it’s surely the first step to realising Microsoft’s ultimate plans to offer purely digital download versions of games, as rumoured.

In addition to supplying the fast internet speeds, Virgin Media will also be using its “Tickles” reward scheme to offer customers free tickets to the show, VIP early-access passes and the chance to play some exclsuive games titles before anybody else. And considering the date of the Expo, 27-30 September, that could be a swathe of the top Christmas releases.

“The Eurogamer Expo is a landmark, annual event for UK gamers, who want sneak previews of brand new games and be able to experience the best that technology can deliver,” says Luke Southern, head of sponsorship and partnerships at the service provider.

“Virgin Media makes that happen, with superfast broadband as standard. As the UK’s fastest broadband provider we offer the best speeds for downloading games, which makes our partnership with Eurogamer Expo, a perfect one.”

Tickets for the Eurogamer Expo 2012 go on sale from 23 February at?www.eurogamerexpo.com. From the same day,?Virgin Media customers will also find out more and buy tickets at tickle.virginmedia.com.

Sky Go Android app now available for selected phones

UPDATED: Other handsets and ICS on the way
Sky Go Android app now available for selected phones

Sky has finally released the Android version of its extremely popular and Pocket-lint Gadget Award-winning live TV and video on demand application, Sky Go. However, at present?the app is not compatible with all handsets, only a few by Samsung and HTC.

Currently, only owners of a Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Incredible or HTC Sensation will be able to use Sky Go, but it is believed that more devices will become available in the future.

Sky Go allows Sky subscribers (and those who pay for the app service separately) to access live broadcasting from Sky Sports, Sky News, Sky Movies, Sky Atlantic, and now, Sky Entertainment channels, including Sky 1, Sky Living and, from tomorrow, Sky Arts 1. The latter channels will now also be available on the iOS versions of the application.

Unlike the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch versions, however, the Android app will not be able to access Sky Movies on demand. That will be added “later in 2012″.

Sky Go will also get the new Sky F1 channel from March.

“We’re extremely happy to announce the roll out of Sky Go on selected Android handsets today and the arrival of the Sky Entertainment channels to mobile devices,” said Holly Knill, head of Sky Go.

“We are always working to ensure that Sky customers have more ways to watch content they love, whether it’s the big Premiership game, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Modern Family or Ruth Jones’ Stella, and this is exactly what this enhanced version of Sky Go delivers.”

Sky Go for Android is available now on Android Market. Access is free to existing Sky TV customers who can register up to two devices at once. Packages are also available to non-subscribers from ?15-?40 per month.

UPDATE: Sky has confirmed that Sky Go for Android will be coming to other devices, including those running Ice Cream Sandwich. It has also revealed that the reason for the delay to all handsets is a security one:

“All Sky Go releases are required to undergo rigorous testing and development when a variation of any operating system or new handset is launched.,” Sky told Pocket-lint.

“We are working hard to support further Android devices, as well as the latest Ice Cream Sandwich operating system (v4.0).

“There are, however, a number of technical challenges that we need to work through before we can do this, such as taking steps to ensure our content is properly protected.

“We realise how much our customers appreciate Sky Go, and are working through these steps in order to allow even more of our customers to enjoy the service.”

Kids’ Choice Awards 2011: The Show And Winners List

<P>For 23 years, <a href="http://www.nick.com/kids-choice-awards" target="_blank">Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards</a> has been an event in which celebrities can truly let loose. After all, it's hard to have an ego when you're getting covered in green slime or being inducted into the Arm Fart Hall of Fame (we're looking at you, Josh Duhamel). Nick's 2011 awards show, which aired lived on the network Saturday from Los Angeles, kept with its tradition of stars finding themselves in some truly outrageous situations. <a href="/news/articles/1657689/jack-black-kids-choice-awards.jhtml">Host Jack Black</a>, who was at the helm for the third time (he last helped hand out those coveted orange kaleidoscope blimps in 2008), kicked things off with an over-the-top musical number. The funnyman, wearing a black leather jumpsuit with flames &#8212; the first of many quirky wardrobe changes &#8212; was joined by a group of dancers to perform his own rendition of the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_eyed_peas/artist.jhtml">Black Eyed Peas</a>' hit "I Gotta Feelin'." <div style="background-color:#000000;width:520px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:video:nick.com:784813" width="512" height="288" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></div></div> Black then introduced the group, as the "Jack Black Eyed Peas," and joined them onstage for "The Time (Dirty Bit)." BEP, who later won the award for Best Music Group, then sang their next single, "Just Can't Get Enough." The first award of the evening was given out to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/16504/personmain.jhtml">Johnny Depp</a>, who won Favorite Movie Actor for his performance in "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/373927/moviemain.jhtml">Alice in Wonderland</a>." Depp, who emerged from backstage, told the kiddie crowd and voters it was "truly a pleasure to receive this award that comes from you guys. I appreciate it." After apologizing for beating Black in the category, Depp told Nick viewers, "You guys are the future; take good care of us." The actor then proceeded to get in on the fun, sliming the group of young fans who stood at the foot of the stage. Depp's stunt led to one of the evening's most memorable &#8212; and by far, funniest &#8212; moments when "Arthur" actor Russell Brand and "Modern Family" star Rico Rodriguez appeared onstage soon after to present the award for Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie (the blimp eventually went to Eddie Murphy, who got the crowd to sing him "Happy Birthday," for his role in "Shrek Forever After"). Before Brand and Rodriguez could even begin their banter at the podium, the freshly slimed youngsters began throwing the green, gooey mess at the two stars. In response to the mayhem, Brand declared, "I'm never having children." Brand continued, as he guarded Rodriguez from the kiddie coup, "I am English! I am your leader! You must not do this, I am royalty! You are all going to juvenile hall. You children are going to prison. You are bad children!" Brand, who is voicing a character in the animated feature "Hop," cried that the moment was not in the script, then joked, "Johnny, I wished you'd drowned them." They weren't the only stars to get slimed during the broadcast. Heidi Klum, who almost took a spill thanks to her sky-high heels, got hit, as did Jason Segel, who received a slime slushie courtesy of Jane Lynch. Even Snoop Doog &#8212; who joined pop-rock group and Nick stars <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/big_time_rush/artist.jhtml">Big Time Rush</a> for their song "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/big-time-rush/619502/boyfriend.jhtml#artist=3454569">Boyfriend</a>" &#8212; got doused in the green stuff. As Willow Smith performed her hits "21st Century Girl" and "Whip My Hair," the 10-year-old was cheered on by her dad, Will Smith, and brother, Jaden Smith, who were in the audience. The final big award of the evening went to <a href="/music/artist/cyrus__miley/artist.jhtml">Miley Cyrus</a>, who won for Favorite Movie Actress for "The Last Song." The former "Hannah Montana" star attempted to put gossip to rest during her acceptance speech as she thanked her family for supporting her career. Cyrus will no doubt get fans wondering about the status of her relationship with "Last Song" co-star and on-again, off-again beau <a href="http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2011/04/01/mile-cyrus-liam-hemsworth-dating-again/">Liam Hemsworth</a>, whom she thanked for "helping me make movie magic" in the 2010 drama. The Big Help Award, which was presented by Rosario Dawson, went to singer/actor Justin Timberlake for his devotion to charities, particularly the work he does with Shriners Hospital for Children. In between cracking jokes about burping and getting the crowd to cheer if they had ever helped anyone, Timberlake took the time to tell his young fans, "Your heart is the most beautiful part, so don't forget to use it." In addition to telling kids they can do their part to help, even with major issues such as the crisis in Japan, the star said something bound to make any adult watching elated: "Listen to your parents!" Finally, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian hit the stage to help give away the last award of the night for Favorite TV Show, which went to the kid-friendly Nickelodeon hit "iCarly." Black kept a high energy throughout the show, including some interactions with his "Kung Fu Panda 2" character, Po, &#8212; one of which featured a cameo from Britney Spears in a pre-recorded segment. He ended the evening with a slime battle between himself and Jim Carrey, who made a surprise finale appearance. Other winners included: <B>Favorite Female Singer</B><br> <LI>Katy Perry <B>Favorite Male Singer</B><br> <LI><a href="/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> <B>Favorite Song</B><br> <LI>"Baby" – Justin Bieber <B>Favorite Movie</B><br> <LI>"The Karate Kid" <B>Favorite Animated Movie</B><br> <LI>"Despicable Me" <B>Favorite Reality Show</B><br> <LI>"American Idol" <B>Favorite TV Actress</B><br> <LI>Selena Gomez <B>Favorite TV Actor</B><br> <LI>Dylan Sprouse <B>Favorite Book</B><br> <LI>"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series <B>Favorite Cartoon</B><br> <LI>"Spongebob Square Pants" <B>Favorite Male Athlete</B><br> <LI>Shaquille O'Neal <B>Favorite Female Athlete</B><br> <LI>Lindsey Vonn <B>Favorite Video Game</B><br> <LI>"Just Dance 2" <i>What was your favorite moment at the 2011 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards? Miley Cyrus Defends Gay Rights Tattoo

Miley Cyrus' new tattoo

<P><a href="/music/artist/cyrus__miley/artist.jhtml">Miley Cyrus</a> has never shied away from speaking her mind, and over the weekend she posted a photo of her latest body ink on <a href="http://yfrog.com/klqc7jlj" target="_blank">Twitter</a>: an equal-sign tattoo on her ring finger. In addition to sharing with the world her pro-gay rights stance via tat, she tweeted the message, "All LOVE is equal." However, the photo quickly prompted a debate on her Twitter account when fans began to respond to Miley's tattoo with mixed feelings. "Where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn't," Miley tweeted to one fan who questioned her belief in God after displaying her support of the gay community. "GOD is the only judge honey. GOD is love." But when her fans began attacking the fan who questioned her, Miley defended her for sharing her opinion with the world. "Dude everyone lay off … Love u! Everyone is entitled 2 opinions! If u don't stand 4 something you'll fall for anything." Her <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/mileycyrus" target="_blank">Twitter</a> profile shares a similar message: "Let your light shine. Be a source of strength &amp; courage. Share your wisdom. RADIATE LOVE." This isn't the first time that Miley's sharing her beliefs on Twitter has sparked debate. In a <i>Parade</i> magazine interview in March 2010, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1634265/miley-cyrus-received-hate-mail-on-twitter.jhtml" target="_blank">Cyrus said</a> that one of the reasons she had <a href="/news/articles/1625191/miley-cyrus-thinks-everyone-should-leave-twitter.jhtml">quit Twitter</a> for a time was that she was getting angry tweets from fans who didn't agree with her support of gay marriage. She returned to <a href="/news/articles/1661364/miley-cyrus-charlie-sheen-twitter.jhtml">Twitter</a> earlier this year. "There has been so much controversy sometimes about what I've said or done because I believe there are no mistakes, because God is the only one who can judge us," Cyrus explained. "That's the reason I deleted my Twitter account because I said on there that I believed in gay marriage because everyone should have the right to love each other, and I got such hate mail about my being a bad person." <i>What do you think of Miley's outspoken support of marriage equality and gay rights? Stars Without Stylists

by Claudine Zap

Blake Lively, stylist-free

They’re beautiful, fashionable, and always red-carpet-ready for their close-ups. But there’s one accessory these stars don’t have: a stylist. So they say. Blake Lively, the “Gossip Girl” star, has become the poster child for going stylist-free.

What does this mean, exactly? The 24-year-old says fashion is her favorite hobby, so she prefers to go with her gut. “I just like whatever I’m feeling. Sometimes things are really beautiful, but they just don’t photograph well, and that’s that.” Yes, we all know that whenever an outfit doesn’t work, it’s the camera’s fault.

Still, the stylish TV show “Gossip Girl” seems to be doing for Lively’s fashion sense what “Sex and the City” did for Sarah Jessica Parker. Off set, Lively clearly loves to show up in designer duds, even if she doesn’t always hit the mark.

The blog Fashionista is doubtful of the Chanel spokesmodel’s claim, noting, “It doesn’t seem that Blake needs a stylist, because she has Eric Daman, ‘Gossip Girl’s’ costume designer, who clearly ‘helps her out’ for big events.”

Other stars who say they turn up at major events with a DIY look include January Jones, Diane Kruger, and the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Certainly, there’s no shame in hiring a stylist. In fact, a celebrity stylist told the New York Times that it can be a game changer. Nicole Chavez, who has dressed Katherine Heigl and Scarlett Johansson, insisted that a good dress is a great career move: “People — casting agents, studio executives — stop and take notice. They are suddenly interested in working with you.”

Whether or not Lively has a stylist, directors are apparently interested in working with the up-and-coming actress. Her career is on the rise, along with her fashionably short hem: She is said to be starring in the upcoming Oliver Stone movie “Savages.”

Sony multi-room audio systems pictures and hands-on

Sony to take on Sonos
Sony multi-room audio systems pictures and hands-on. Audio, Sony, Sonos 0

Sony has today shown Pocket-lint its new range of multi-room audio devices. The self-contained speaker systems are clearly intended to compete with the current champion of such things, Sonos. And from what we saw, we were very impressed indeed.

There are three self-contained speaker systems in the range. The first is the smallest, the SA-NS310, clearly aimed at the kitchen. The next model is the SA-NS410, which is the same power as the largest, the SA-NS410, although it lacks the 360 degree speaker of the higher-end model. The 410 also features a five-hour battery, which means you can pick it up and carry it to any room.

Sony has done its level best to make the set-up of its audio system as simple as possible. Each speaker creates its own wireless hotspot when you first turn it on, a free iOS or Android app then introduces the speaker to your wireless network. And then you’re good to go. As with Sonos, there is software which keeps the speakers in sync too, so you can listen in multiple rooms without having any nasty delays.

There are cloud music services – like Music Unlimited – which integrate with the speakers and if you have an iOS-powered device, then you can also make use of Airplay. DLNA servers are supported too, so if you have a NAS on your home network, then you can play music to the speakers from it. There’s no hardware remote though, so you will need an Android device or an iPod/iPad or iPhone.

Apparently, multi-room audio isn’t such a big deal in Japan. Smaller houses and thinner walls mean that it’s not really necessary. But Sony seems to recognise that Europe and the US are big markets for these devices, and it has designed them with that in mind. There are no prices yet, but Pocket-lint understands that Sony will be doing its best to make the speakers attractive to people who might not want to pay the premium on Sonos hardware.

Olivia Wilde, blonde or brunette?

Olivia Wilde, you know, the hot actress from House and possibly Jason Sudeikis’ girlfriend? Well, you can have her either blonde or brunette? Actually, you can’t have her in any way. Unless this is fantasy land for you. And it should be. Because it is for me. So in that case I take her brunette. [...]

Nikki Reed & Paul McDonald’s Smell-y Night Out

Making the most of a late evening out, Nikki Reed was spotted leaving The Smell nightclub last night (February 21).

Joined by her husband Paul McDonald, the ?Twilight Saga: New Moon? actress was all smiles as she carried some musical equipment out to her car.

During her recent time at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, Nikki confessed that she has one non-negotiable style guideline to which she always holds true.

?One fashion rule [I abide by], I guess, is to try to stay comfortable in what you wear ? no matter what the article of clothing is.?

Over the past decade-and-a-bit, Renault’s performance division, RenaultSport, has given us a string of hotted-up Clios and Meganes, providing those of us with petrol in our veins an accessible way into fast, front-wheel drive cars – ones that seemed to have been invented specifically to make driving quickly on the average (badly surfaced) British back road great fun.

According to Renault, this new Raider model is a special-edition final hurrah for the RenaultSport Clio 200 – a car that’s been on sale since 2009. There’s a brand new Clio due in September, so this limited run of just 50 cars is the pinnacle of the current fast Clio’s development.

And if you’re looking for affordable fun on four wheels, this is as close to Nirvana as it gets. In many ways, the Clio 200 Raider is the antithesis of a Pocket-Lint car, but it’s proof that sometimes cars are better when they’re simpler and stripped back.

It has a naturally aspirated two litre engine, – there are no turbos, plugs or battery packs here – a manual six-speed gearbox and no “flappy paddles:, to quote a certain loudmouthed BBC motoring journalist. And while it does come with Bluetooth, hands-free keyless entry and the ability to play mp3s, we can’t really tell you how well any of these things work. That’s because we were so busy having fun on deserted back roads in North Wales that we forgot to try them. Sorry about that, but if you get to have a go in one of these, you’ll understand why – it’s a car that makes you just want to get in and, well, drive.

So given all this apparent simplicity, why does it feel so special? The Recaro race seats for a start, which grip you like a vice and make you feel like you and the car are a whole. Then there’s the engine. It might only have 200 horsepower and the lack of turbo(s) means you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about below 4500 rpm, but get it spinning beyond 5000 rpm and it lunges for the redline like it’s possessed. In fact, it goes so hard up at the top end of the rev range that Renault equip the car with not only a change up dash light but a “beep” system – one beep means you’re at 7000 rpm, two beeps meaning “change up now, you’re nearly at the limiter”.

Best bit though is the grip and handling of this car. The Raider has uprated wheels and tyres compared to the standard 200, and at one point we almost got out to check the car wasn’t leaving a trail of glue behind it, so sticky is it on a twisty road. Turn the wheel and it just grips and grips and grips – until you’re pitching it into corners at frankly crazy speeds and chuckling like a madman as you do it.

Of course, you can have nearly as much fun and save yourself nearly ?4000 by buying a regular Clio 200. But you’ll be missing out on those special wheels and tyres of the Raider, plus those epic Recaro seats (an option in other Clio 200s) and the choice of free inbuilt TomTom SatNav or the RenaultSport monitor – basically a computer game type read out of telemetry showing you how many Gs you’re pulling round corners.

Buy a regular Clio 200 and you won’t get the choice of the Diavalo Red?of this test car or a Stealth Grey paint finish either – both “true” matte paint finishes applied in the factory (rather than a wrap), which we suspect accounts for much of the price hike over the standard car.

Of course, the ride is hard, the interior plastics are lousy and on a motorway slog it’ll be far from the most comfortable or refined place to while away a few hours. But if you’re after something for those tasks, you’re unlikely to be in a market for a car like this anyway.

But if you are after something that’s fun, fast and relatively affordable and are into spirited driving on the average British back road, the RenaultSport Clio 200 Raider comes highly recommended. Given that the next fast Clio will almost certainly be powered by a turbo engine and weigh more than this car, the whole focus and attitude of the next generation looks likely to be quite different. So, if you truly enjoy driving in the old fashioned sense of the word – working hard in order to drive quickly, changing your own gears and wringing the engine out to extract every last drop of power – the Clio 200 Raider could just be the last, and greatest, hot hatch of a generation. Analogue thrills for the digital age? They cost just ?21,820.
